The legacy left by the late John Dobson has given amateur astronomers access to telescope apertures once limited to professional astronomers.
Gondwana Telescopes is born out of 30 years of using telescopes in Australia, and 20 years building them. Rutted roads, humid coast, dry interior, close encounters with wildlife on the road, dust – all experiences that have led to the creation of a line of ultralight telescopes that has the protection of the primary mirror at its core.
Gondwana Telescopesis the creation of long time amateur astronomer Alexander Massey. Alex has been a keen visual observer since he got his first little 2" refractor over thirty years ago. He has also had a passion for visual art, and astronomy and art found a natural partnership with Alex who's greatest passion within visual astronomy is astronomical sketching.
Dark skies are two hours away from our home in Sydney, so the inspiration has been to create telescopes that were not only large in aperture, but also very compact when stowed and transported, yet accurate and very smooth in action when assembled.
Today, Gondwana Telescopesoffers a line of telescopes that meets these same compact stowed criteria, an accurate assembled instrument, and one with smooth actions, utilising some of the finest light weight components available.
Gondwana Telescopes also recognises that not everyone requires a compact instrument. Solid tube telescopes are still a viable option. Yet many of these instruments are supplied with dobsonian mounts that just do not have the longevity, reliablility or smoothness of action that a dobsonian mount can deliver. Our mounts are designed around the experience also gained from using solid tube instruments. Many features found on the mount of our compact telescopes are also found on our custom dobsonian mounts for existing optical tube assemblies. Appropriate materials, large bearing diameters, balanced tubes and other features gained from experience.
We welcome enquiries about all our products. We also welcome enquiries about realising your own projects and instruments, from concept through to delivery.
Displays and Demonstrations by Gondwana Telescopes
Keep a look out in the News and Events page for where Gondwana Telescopes will be having displays and demonstrations of Marana and Karee!
There's more to us than just building telescopes.
We build our instruments from actually using telescopes and following our own niche within astronomy. This is where much of our inspiration for how we do things comes from. Alex's own blog is where he gets his hands dirty with astronomy.
We use the telescopes we build!
Here is a short video of Alex Massey using one of his Kulalee telescopes to sketch the Lagoon Nebula at the 2016 Queensland Astrofest.
